New England Warming More Rapidly Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Study Finds.
The US region famous for its colonial history, maple syrup and bitterly cold, snow-bound winters is undergoing a rapid change. New research indicates that New England is heating up faster than nearly any other place on the globe.
Breakneck Pace of Transformation
The speed of temperature increase in New England makes it the most rapidly warming region of the contiguous United States, as per the research. The pace of its warming has apparently increased significantly in the last half-decade.
"The temperature is not only increasing, it's speeding up," said a primary researcher on the study. "It's really sped up in recent years, which surprised me. Our regional climate is moving in a different trajectory, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."
The research positions the New England region among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, together with the polar region and sections of Europe and China. "New England is now moving toward being like the south-eastern US," the researcher noted.
Study Approach and Findings
For the study, researchers analyzed multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis covered the six states of the New England region.
They found that New England has warmed by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the global average, with the planet warming by approximately 1.3 degrees Celsius in the same period.
"This represents very fast warming, which is worrying," commented the study author.
Key Climate Trends
- Nighttime temperatures are increasing more quickly than daytime temperatures.
- Winters are warming at twice the rate of other seasons.
- The severe cold New England is known for is being diminished.
Marine Influences and the "Heat Battery"
A primary cause for this unusual accumulation of heat may be shifts in the Atlantic Ocean. The world's oceans are absorbing more than 90% of the surplus thermal energy captured by greenhouse gases.
In the region near New England, an influx of cold, fresh water from Arctic ice melt is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is pushing heated ocean water into the coastal waters, concentrating heat along the shoreline that is then carried further inland by prevailing winds.
"The excess heat from global warming is being stored in the sea like a huge storage unit," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the air and New England is a receiver of that heat."
Impacts on Culture and Weather
Once seen as a relatively stable region, New England has suffered severe weather shocks in recent years, including enormous floods and prolonged dry spells.
The increasing temperatures endangers iconic aspects of local culture:
- Maple syrup production is facing challenges by shifting climate conditions.
- Winter sports are impacted; an hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been canceled or relocated repeatedly due to unsafe ice conditions.
- Ski resorts have struggled because of inadequate snowfall.
"I live just north of Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the local ponds regularly," said the researcher. "That sort of thing has pretty much vanished from large parts of southern New England."
