Roughly fifty cars have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report preliminary tests show the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are not yet cognizant of any harm in association with the event," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were working "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the community for details.
A senior political figure stated the incident made him speechless and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on online, referring to the death of nine individuals by a gunman targeting people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
